Findlay, local union sponsor tourney
April 29, 2011 - 1:16 am
Even with an unemployment rate that has hit more than 60 percent in the Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union 525, members of the Southern Nevada group are continuing to support the community by joining with Findlay Acura in the Valley Automall.
Union members and the dealership are sponsoring the third annual Charles England Local 525 Scholarship Golf Tournament Saturday at Black Mountain Country Club in Henderson.
With a tee off scheduled for 7:30 a.m., the event is expected to draw nearly 190 players, which has helped several local high school students pursue their college education.
"We wanted to help children of the local union members," explained the scholarship's namesake Chuck England, a native Southern Nevadan who graduated from Basic High School in 1965. "Since its inception, the drive has produced six scholarships for students who have pursued their college degrees at various universities."
England worked as a pipe fitter in Southern Nevada for approximately 12 years before becoming business manager of Local 525.
"We had some great years here in the construction industry," England recalled. "Obviously, things are not real good right now, but our members are supporting this golf tournament just the same. The people of our union have big hearts, especially when it comes to helping local youth."
Findlay Acura, spearheaded by General Manager James Cobbs, is a part of Findlay Automotive, which has been active in Southern Nevada for 50 years. The dealership is sponsoring three holes with 2011 Acuras offered to anyone hitting a hole-in-one.
"We're looking forward to participating in the tournament," said Jim Donohue, director of marketing. "The pipe-fitter's scholarship is so very important, especially during times like this, and we're glad to help them."
The Mechanical Contractors Association is also a sponsor in the tournament.
