Former UNLV football players take part in pro workouts at Rebel Park

Former UNLV wide receiver Phillip Payne ran 4.6 seconds in the 40-yard dash at UNLV's pro day today at Rebel Park.

Payne said he was disappointed over his time after training at Fischer Sports in Phoenix to try to improve his speed.

"Slow," Payne said. "It wasn't what I thought it was going to be."

Wes Bunting, director of college scouting for the National Football Post, said Payne's time wasn't a surprise.

"You knew coming in that Payne wasn't the fastest guy, so you weren't expecting a 4.4," Bunting said. "He's never been able to create separation. He's a poor man's Juron Criner (Arizona wide receiver), which isn't a good thing. Those guys are a dime a dozen. But he's a hard-working kid."

Payne is expected to sign as an undrafted free agent, but Bunting said he could see Payne going in the late rounds as well.

Linebacker Nate Carter, defensive end James Dunlap, wide receiver Michael Johnson and defensive back/kick returner Deante Purvis also worked out.

Eight NFL teams sent scouts -- Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, Houston Texas, Oakland Raiders, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Diego Chargers and Seattle Seahawks.
