‘Free-ranging’ chicken halts traffic on Calif. freeway — VIDEO

A daring runaway chicken on the Bay Bridge toll plaza in Northern California left many in a foul mood Wednesday morning after being first spotted a little before 6 a.m.

KCBS Traffic tweeted the first sighting, later saying there was a report of multiple hens in the Fastrak lanes. Local reporters tweeted pictures of the traffic back-up as drivers slowed to avoid an accident.

California Highway Patrol and a members of Caltrans began an effort to catch the chicken before it crossed the road, while CHP Oakland tweeted, "Please DO NOT try and grab the chickens on the freeway. Let CHP find out why the chickens crossed the road, it's not worth getting hit!"

About 10:00 a.m., the hen — or at least one of them — was caught by an Oakland police officer. The hen was placed in the back of a police car and, according to CBS San Francisco, taken to a vet clinic for a checkup.
