Gibbons hitting the road
April 30, 2009 - 12:19 pm
Gov. Jim Gibbons held a news conference today to once again rail against legislators' plans to raise taxes. On Friday, he's planning to take the same show to Henderson. And in the coming weeks, he plans to go on tour.
Gibbons has stops planned in Minden, South and North Lake Tahoe, Fallon, Eureka, Ely, Elko and Winnemucca from May 6 to May 21 for what he's calling the "Nevada's Road to Recovery Tour." The Nevada Republican Party sent an e-mail to its members with the tour schedule.
"Many legislators plan to raise your taxes to pay for more government rather than live within their means," Gibbons says in the e-mail. "I believe state government cannot ask more from citizens who have less. Higher taxes will kill jobs and will kill Nevada’s chance at a speedy economic recovery. If you agree with me, please plan to attend one of my 'Road To Recovery' community meetings."
The governor apparently is mounting an aggressive push to get his message out as the Legislature moves into its final weeks. The pitch is similar for his Friday appearance in Southern Nevada, where he plans a photo op with a local small businessman who says he can't afford more taxes.
"Certain legislative leaders have claimed that the business community is in favor of these tax hikes," the news release on Friday's 11 a.m. news conference states. "ProShop Motor Sports and Marine owner Dan Boyle is not among them."
