Gibbons to skip national governors meeting

WASHINGTON — Preoccupied with Nevada's budget crisis, Gov. Jim Gibbons will skip this weekend's National Governors Association meeting in Washington, aides said today.

It will be the first winter meeting Gibbons has missed out of three since he became governor in January 2007.

The high-profile convention draws most of the top state leaders who no doubt will lament the state of their economies during meetings that run from Saturday through Monday.

The association said this year's program will focus on infrastructure issues, where discussions will be led by current NGA Chairman Gov. Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania.

As they do most years, the governors also are scheduled to meet with the president.
