Habitat for Humanity and nationally known artists prepare home for mural
August 16, 2008 - 9:00 pm
A group of nationally recognized urban artists will paint the largest mural in Las Vegas today on the 135-foot wall of the Habitat for Humanity Las Vegas building.
The group is led by local artist, Ras. One. The invited artists will be assigned sections of the mural to interpret the elements of the Habitat for Humanity mission including volunteerism, working families and building community.
Participating muralists will begin work on the project at 3 p.m. Located at 1401 N. Decatur Blvd, the Habitat for Humanity Las Vegas building houses the administrative offices and Habitat's ReStore.
The 135-foot-by-20-foot wall faces an open parking lot and has long been the target of "taggers" who scrawl gang signs and personal "tags" marking territory. The mural, painted by well-known graffiti artists will deter tagging by others who recognize and respect their work. Ras.One, a local artist, musician and activist, conceived the idea, planned the work and recruited the artists. Habitat staff helped him gather donations and resources. The artists donated their time and talent.
