FIRE FIGHTERS ORGANIZATION WARNS
OF POTENTIAL SCAM

Rusty McAllister, president of the Professional Fire Fighters of Nevada, has issued a warning for residents to be wary of a phone campaign requesting monetary donations.

The campaign is not backed by the Professional Fire Fighters of Nevada. McAllister issued a statement and said the group raises money for charities such as the Muscular Dystrophy Association through a boot drive but never would ask the public for money, especially over the phone.

BEST WESTERN AWARDED FOR QUALITY

The Best Western Plus Henderson location received the Best Western Director's Award for outstanding quality.

The award recognized Best Western International hotels scoring in the top 20 percent of all 2,400 North American properties in cleanliness and maintenance.

HENDERSON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA FEATURES YOUNG ARTISTS

The Henderson Symphony Orchestra is slated to host its young artist concert series at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Henderson Pavilion, 200 S. Green Valley Parkway.

More than 30 young musicians auditioned in January to perform at the concert.

Those selected are Emily Richardson, 11; Liam Mansfield, 15; Sabrina Parry, 15; Caolinn Mejza, 16; Artem Alexanyan, 16; Hazen Mayo, 17; and Nicole Whelchel, 17.

HENDERSON SEEKS ARTISTS
FOR MAY FESTIVAL

Henderson is seeking artists to participate in an art festival May 12-13 at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water St.

The event, which is scheduled for Mother's Day weekend, is expected to feature artists, crafts, live entertainment, chalk art, interactive stations and children's activities.

Deadline for applications is March 19.

Beautification Commission honors Green Valley Ranch Resort

The Henderson Commemorative Beautification Commission named Green Valley Ranch Resort the most recent recipient of its Community Pride Award. The award was presented at the Feb. 21 Henderson City Council meeting.

The Community Pride Award recognizes Henderson residents, businesses and groups that have improved the appearance of their neighborhoods or properties or added to the beauty or cleanliness of Henderson.

The commission cited the resort's landscaping, efficient irrigation system and sustainable practices into its daily operations.

ST. PATRICK'S DAY FESTIVAL RETURNS

The city of Henderson is slated to host the 46th annual Sons of Erin St. Patrick's Day Parade & Festival March 15-18 at the Henderson Pavilion, 200 S. Water St.

The event will include entertainment, carnival rides, food vendors and a parade.

For the second year, Sons of Erin is to donate proceeds of the event to the St. Baldrick's Foundation, which raises money to fight children's cancer.

Women can receive low- to no-cost Breast cancer screenings

Thanks to a $10,000 grant from Food 4 Less, Nevada Health Center's Mammovan is scheduled to offer low- to no-cost breast cancer screenings at selected Food 4 Less locations.

Stops are scheduled from 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday and May 1 at 8180 Las Vegas Blvd. South. For more information, visit nvhealthcenters.org.

Community invited to voice opinions
on bus Route changes

The public is encouraged to weigh in on proposed changes to Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada routes and policies from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Albertsons, 2910 Bicentennial Parkway.

The proposed changes include replacing an existing transit route with a new service and eliminating service on routes that are close to other routes in the system.

Public comments will be accepted through March 16.

The proposed service changes will be presented to the RTC Board of Commissioners for final approval. Pending the RTC Board of Commissioners' approval, the proposed service changes will be effective May 20.

Learn about basic auto maintenance during workshops in March and April

The city of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department plans to host basic auto maintenance workshops in March and April. Enrollment is $9 per workshop and is for participants 18 or older.

Workshops are scheduled from 7 to
8:15 p.m. March 19 (activity 191152-36) and April 9 (activity 191152-37) at the Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Drive. Another workshop is scheduled from 7 to 8:15 p.m. April 3 (activity 191152-48) at the Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St.

Topics are expected to include proper preventative care, including why it is important to change the car's oil, brake, power steering and radiator fluids. Participants will be taught how to perform basic tasks, including checking air pressure and tire treads and putting on a spare tire.

Registration under way
for Henderson Senior Games

Registration for the 2012 Henderson Senior Games is open through March 20. The annual program is a sporting and social event for athletes 50 or older and celebrates the spirit of friendly competition and achievement.

Registration costs $15 per person (with the exception of volleyball) and includes an event T-shirt. Most events entered cost $3 to $5 each. Registration will not be accepted after March 20, but walk-ins may be accepted at some events depending on space availability.

The Henderson Senior Games are scheduled from April 10-29 at a variety of Henderson locations. First-, second- and third-place awards will be presented at the close of each event.

Scheduled events include basketball skills, bowling (singles, doubles and mixed doubles), fitness and powerlifting, golf (18 holes), table tennis (singles, doubles and mixed doubles), tennis (singles, doubles and mixed doubles), volleyball (men's, women's and coed team play) and track and field (springs, runs, javelin, jumps, discus, shot put and softball throw).
