HENDERSON OFFERS HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS, Trick-Or-Treating hours

Henderson police suggest that trick-or-treating take place between 6 and 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The department said those participating should consider wearing makeup instead of masks to prevent obstructing vision, keep the costume short to avoid tripping and keep the house well-lighted.

In addition to advice for walkers, drivers are advised to slow down in residential neighborhoods, be extra alert, look for children in intersections and on curbs, and slowly and carefully exit driveways.

Ethel M to issue tickets to annual cactus-lighting ceremony

Starting Thursday, members of the public can get tickets for Ethel M's annual cactus-lighting event on Nov. 13. A limited number of tickets will be available to those who bring one new, unwrapped toy to the factory at 2 Cactus Garden Drive. For each toy, people can receive a four-pack of tickets to the event, with a limit of eight tickets per family. Toys will be donated to the annual KLUC Toy Drive.

The lighting event is expected to feature entertainers George Wallace, Michael Grimm and Zowie Bowie. Photos with Santa Claus, face painting, balloon artists, raffles and chocolate samples also are planned. All guests also can receive 3-D glasses to view special effects at the lighting.

The holiday cactus garden is scheduled to be open from 5 to 10 p.m. Nov. 14 to Jan. 1. For more information, visit ethelm.com.

YARD SALE planned at SENIOR FACILITY

An "Upscale Yard Sale" is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at the Heritage Park Senior Facility, 300 S. Racetrack Road. The event includes booths featuring clothing and jewelry.

Church plans craft fair, rummage sale

Green Valley Methodist Church, 2200 Robindale Road, is planning a Trash to Treasure Rummage and Holiday Craft Fair from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Proceeds are slated to go to the Haiti Water Project. A bake sale also is planned. For more information, visit gvumc.org.

for junior basketball winter league

The Henderson National Junior Basketball Winter Divisional League is accepting early registration for boys and girls in grades kindergarten through eight . Individual registration fee is $150 and includes a uniform, pictures and awards. Games start in early December. Ten games are scheduled, including playoffs. CHURCHes TO HOST EVENT ABOUT HEALING

The Rev. Mike Endicott is expected to teach about healing from Nov. 8-10 at the Lakes Lutheran Church, 8200 W. Sahara Ave.

The event is scheduled from noon to 7 p.m. Nov. 8-9 and 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 10.

Four local congregations, including Holy Spirit Lutheran, Saint Thomas Old Catholic, Saint Paul's Charismatic Episcopal Church of Henderson and Westminster Presbyterian, are hosting the teaching.

Free health fair planned for current, retired federal government employees

A free health fair for current and retired federal government employees and their spouses or survivors has been scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 9 in the second-floor ballroom at the Suncoast, 9090 Alta Drive. The event is sponsored by the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association.

Representatives from the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program, including Blue Cross-Blue Shield, GEHA, Mail Handlers, United Health Care and the Health Plan of Nevada are expected to attend and answer questions about 2013 health benefits.

United Way is collecting women's suits

United Way of Southern Nevada's Women's Leadership Council is scheduled to host its fifth annual suit drive from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at NV Energy, 6226 W. Sahara Ave.

The drive aims to collect new and gently used suits and other business attire for women.

In addition to the drop off at NV Energy, people can drop off items at the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood, 3667 Las Vegas Blvd. South, until Nov. 1.

Donations are expected to benefit S.A.F.E. House, HopeLink of Southern Nevada, Safe Nest, The Shade Tree and Goodwill Career Connections.

Henderson seeks entries
for Winterfest parade

The city of Henderson is seeking groups and individuals to participate in the annual WinterFest Evening Light Parade at 5 p.m. Dec. 15 on Water Street in downtown Henderson.

This year's theme is "An Old-Fashioned Christmas Delight." Entries will be judged in three categories: incorporation of lights, creativity and overall appeal. First place is set to receive $1,000, second place is $750 and third place is $500.

Free Flu shots to be available
in Henderson

The Southern Nevada Immunization and Health Coalition and its partners plan to host multiple no-cost flu immunization and health clinics until Dec. 8 in the Las Vegas Valley.

The next Henderson clinic is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 8 at St. Rose Dominican Hospital Siena Campus, MacDonald Conference Center, 3001 St. Rose Parkway.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends that everyone 6 months or older should receive the flu vaccine each year. It's especially important the following get the shot because they are at high risk for serious flu-related complications or because they live with or care for people who have a greater risk for flu-related complications:

n Pregnant women.

n Children older than 6 months and younger than 5.

n People 50 or older.

n People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions.

n People who live or work in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.

n Health care workers.

n Caregivers of children younger than 6 months (these children are too young to be vaccinated).

The clinics will provide flu shots on a first-come, first-served basis. Children older tha n 6 months, adolescents and adults are eligible for the inoculations.

COATS FOR KIDS DRIVE
continues AT ALBERTSONS

The 13th annual Coats for Kids drive continues through Saturday at Albertsons stores across the valley.

Bring gently used coats to any Albertsons store and place them in the marked box at the front of the store. Aramark Uniforms will pick up the coats and drop them off at Al Phillips The Cleaner, which has cleaned all the coats free for the past 13 years. They are distributed to needy children by The Salvation Army's Family Services.

As part of the Lucky 13 theme for this year, anyone who donates a coat can enter a drawing for one of 13 pairs of free tickets to see Carrot Top's show at the Luxor. Entry forms are available at the Albertsons service desks.

HELP OF SOUTHERN NEVADA
SEEKS HOLIDAY VOLUNTEERS

HELP of Southern Nevada is calling for volunteers to assist with a number of programs this holiday season. Assistance is accepted from individuals who can donate any amount of time.

Areas where volunteers are needed include: Assisting clients with their applications for holiday programs at HELP's main campus, 1640 E. Flamingo Road; assisting in receiving donated Thanksgiving turkeys at various locations (turkeys will be given to more than 1,200 families); and assisting in receiving holiday gifts for selected clients in the Adopt-A-Family program.
