Orthodontics office wants
to buy your halloween candy
Chenin Orthodontics, 10730 S. Eastern Ave., is planning its fourth annual Halloween Candy Buyback Event from 4:30 to 6 p.m. today.
The office plans to pay $1 for every pound of candy received, with a 5-pound buyback limit per child.
This program partners with Nellis Air Force Base, which sends the collected candy to troops overseas along with letters and photos from the events.

Public Meetings on Proposed
Sloan Hills Mining SET FOR this week
Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak is encouraging residents to attend public meetings scheduled for this week on a proposal to allow open-pit mining in the Sloan Hills.
The meeting schedule is:
n 1 to 4 p.m. today at the Henderson Convention Center, 200 S. Water St.
n 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Coronado High School, 1001 Coronado Center Drive.
n 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Liberty High School, 2700 Liberty Heights Ave.

SANTA CLAUS is coming to the Galleria
Santa Claus is slated to arrive Saturday at the Galleria at Sunset mall, 1300 W. Sunset Road. He plans to be there until Dec. 24.
The kickoff event, which is scheduled to start at 11 a.m., features face painting, balloon artists, story time, and milk and cookies. Children also can receive a free gift bag. Children are encouraged to register wish lists with guest services by Thursday.

LIBRARY CONCLUDES HEALTH SERIES
The Henderson Libraries continues its 60 Days to Better Health series from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Green Valley Library, 2797 N. Green Valley Parkway.
The last presentation is slated to be by Dr. Claudine Mendoza from Good Night Pediatrics. She is scheduled to present a discussion about healthy snacks and lunches. Food samples, giveaways and a raffle are planned.

Green Valley United Methodist Church plans rummage and craft fair
A Trash to Treasure rummage and holiday craft fair is planned from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Green Valley United Methodist Church, 2200 Robindale Road.
Used household items, clothes, toys, books and furniture will be for sale. Crafters will be selling their wares as well, such as quilted and sewn items, handmade clay and beaded jewelry, woven earrings, fused glass, ceramics and handmade cards. A bake sale also is planned.

City to host first Turkey Regatta cardboard boat race
The City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department is launching its inaugural Heritage Park Turkey Regatta from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Heritage Park Aquatic Complex, 310 S. Racetrack Road. Admission and participation is $1 to $2 per person (all ages) at the door. Children 8 or younger must be accompanied by an adult in the water and within arm's reach at all times.
Participants can race across the pool with their own decorated cardboard boats, which they will build at home. Only cardboard, tape and glue are allowed in actual construction, although boats can be colored and decorated and can range from 12 to 36 inches long. Boats will be powered by their human crew, and parents may assist small children during the race.

St. Viator Holiday Bazaar
scheduled for this weekend
St. Viator's Holiday Bazaar is set for 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday in the Parish Center, 2461 E. Flamingo Road at the corner of Eastern Avenue. The Sunset Garden Club plans to meet at noon Nov. 8 at the Paseo Verde Library, 280 S. Green Valley Parkway. The topic is scheduled to be "Growing Orchids in Las Vegas," presented by Melanie Long, who writes the Las Vegas Home & Garden column for examiner.com. She also has a business, PlantNannyLV, providing care for orchids and other delicate plants while their owners are away. This event is open to the public.
Rio Secco Golf Club to host
Wendy's 3-tour Challenge Nov. 8
Rio Secco Golf Club, 2851 Grand Hills Drive, plans to host the Wendy's 3-Tour Challenge to benefit The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption at 9 a.m. Nov. 8. The event, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, is the only professional golf tournament that pits three players from the PGA, LPGA and Champions tours against each other in a head-to-head competition for bragging rights and a share of the $1 million purse.
The Wendy's 3-Tour Challenge event is free and open to the public.
The Champions Tour Team consists of Mark Calcavecchia, Jay Haas and Kenny Perry. The LPGA Tour Team consists of Paula Creamer, Natalie Gulbis and Cristie Kerr. The PGA Tour Team consists of Brandt Snedeker, Boo Weekley and Gary Woodland.

Henderson is opening the 2011 Holiday Decorating Contest, sponsored by the Henderson Commemorative Beautification Commission.
The contest is open to residential single-family homes within the city limits. Submissions will be accepted until Nov. 17. The program is limited to the first 50 entries.

LIBRARY HOLDS CHALLENGE
TO RAISE MONEY
Henderson Libraries has launched its Grand Challenge to see who can raise $1,000 in 30 days.
The organization is encouraging individuals and teams to compete to raise $1,000 in the most creative way possible.
Four groups already have accepted the challenge. People can enter the challenge at hendersonlibraries
foundation.org.
This challenge is part of the foundation's effort to raise $1 million over the next year.
Catholic Charities' WIC program moves to new location on Horizon Drive
Catholic Charities' Women, Infant and Children program has moved to a new location at 270 E. Horizon Drive, Suite 109, and is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 a.m. Monday through Friday.
The new location is in line with direct bus routes and should serve as a more convenient location for clients in the Henderson area.
The WIC p rogram provides supplemental foods and nutrition services to pregnant women, their infants and children up to age 5 . Postpartum women also can receive services between six and 12 months after their delivery. WIC also provides referrals to other health and public agencies within the community.
