Mayor Hafen hosts meeting
about refinancing mortgages
Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen hosted a roundtable meeting Aug. 2 with real estate officials and community leaders regarding tools and resources for residents to refinance their mortgages.
The meeting, facilitated by the Nevada office of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, was put on at the request of the White House to share tips with participants and gather feedback on what is happening in the community.
Information gathered at the meeting was expected to be complied and provided to the White House by HUD.

COINS COLLECTED from Fountain
to be DONATED TO BOYS & GIRLS clubs
All coins tossed into the fountain at the Miracle Mile Shops inside Planet Hollywood Resort, 3667 Las Vegas Blvd. South, in August are expected to be donated to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Henderson.
In honor of the United Nations' International Youth Day on Sunday , Planet Hollywood is collecting donations to support various educational programs.

Sen. Heller to speak at luncheon
The Southern Hills Republican Women plan to welcome Sen. Dean Heller during a luncheon at 11 a.m. Aug. 21 at Buckman's, 2600 Hampton Road. Doors open at 10:45 a.m.

PASEO VERDE LIBRARY to CELEBRATE
10TH ANNIVERSARY
Henderson Libraries is planning to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Paseo Verde Library from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 24 at the library, 280 S. Green Valley Parkway.
Members of the Henderson City Council and library board are expected to attend .
The celebration comes during tough times for Henderson Libraries, which might have to close two locations if a 2-cent tax increase is not approved on the Nov. 6 ballot.

Henderson Symphony Orchestra
invites musicians to audition
The Henderson Symphony Orchestra plans to host auditions from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 25 in Room 160 of Beam Hall at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, 4545 S. Maryland Parkway.
All strings are encouraged to audition, as well as Oboe 2 and substitute positions for all winds and brass players. For the auditions, string players need to prepare two repertoire selections from the orchestral excerpts list published on the Henderson Symphony Orchestra website, hendersonsymphony.org. Other instruments may audition for substitute positions.

MOMS CLUB to HOST MONTHLY MEETING

City is accepting entries
for trails Day photo contest
The city of Henderson is accepting entries for its annual Trails Day Photo Contest. Entries will be accepted until 5 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Heritage Park Senior Facility, 300 S. Racetrack Road. There is no cost to participate, and the contest is open to amateur photographers of all ages. The contest includes 10 categories and themes. Winning photographs will be showcased at the Southern Nevada National Trails Day Celebration on Oct. 6 at Cornerstone Park, 1600 Wigwam Parkway.

CLASS to train residents
ON EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
The city of Henderson Office of Emergency Management is scheduled to host a training class for the Community Emergency Response Team from 6 to 9 p.m. starting in September at the Henderson Training Center, 401 Parkson Road.
Participants are expected to learn how to be better prepared in emergency situations. Classes are free and will be offered on a Monday or a Wednesday for six weeks. Classes are set to begin Sept. 10 and 12. For more information, visit nvcert.org.
Gibson LIBRARY OFFERS DRIVE-THROUGH SERVICE to pick up reserved items
The Gibson Library, 100 W. Lake Mead Parkway, is offering a drive-through window for patrons to use.
As part of a beat-the-heat technique, the library allows customers to reserve movies, books and music online at www.mypubliclibrary.org and pick the items up from the library between 9:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. without leaving their car.

PLANNING COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES
LOGO CONTEST for nevada's 150th
Plans are in the works for a year long celebration commemorating Nevada's 150th year of statehood on Oct. 31, 2014. The celebration's planning committee, formed by Gov. Brian Sandoval, is encouraging the public to get involved by designing the event's logo to be used in promotional and event efforts.
The theme of Nevada's 150th anniversary will be "Battle Born-Nevada Proud," and all interested professional or amateur artists, designers and advertising and public relations agencies are invited to participate.
Requirements for participation include:
n The resident or company designing the logo must reside primarily in Nevada.
n Artwork must include the tagline "Battle Born. Nevada Proud."
n Artwork designed and submitted by the artist must be free to the committee.
n Final artwork must be provided as print-ready for use in a .jpg, .eps or Illustrator file. Hand-drawn illustrations will not be considered.
n The logo needs to be showcased in three different applications to show its versatility for the multitude of uses and needs.
The contest will be conducted through a request for proposals, available online at sites.google.com/site/nevada150th, or by requesting a copy from planning committee member Lori Nelson at lori.nelson@stationcasinos.com. All logo contest details, and terms and conditions are available.
Submissions are due by Aug. 23 and will be judged by the planning committee. The winning logo is scheduled to be unveiled at a to-be-determined Nevada Day celebration on Oct. 31.
ENTRIES SOUGHT FOR SUPERRUN CAR SHOW
Henderson is seeking entries for the 2012 SuperRun Classic Car Show scheduled for Sept. 20-23 in the Water Street District. It is the show's 13th anniversary.
Registration before Sept. 10 is $50, with space limited to the first 1,000 entries.
