STEVENS WINS RE-ELECTION
AS DEPARTMENT 1 JUDGE

Incumbent Judge Mark Stevens won the June 4 general election for Henderson Municipal Court Judge Department 1, defeating Sandy Allred DiGiacomo, chief deputy district attorney for Clark County.

Stevens received 63.89 percent of the vote while DiGiacomo received 36.11 percent. Of the 143,933 registered voters in Henderson, 10,720 voted.

Stevens is scheduled to be sworn in at the Henderson City Council meeting at 7 p.m. June 18 at City Hall, 240 S. Water St.

HENDERSON RECEIVES GOLD LEAF AWARD

The Western Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture recently presented the Gold Leaf Award to the city of Henderson. The city’s parks and recreation department was honored for its Therapeutic Recreation Arbor Day program, in which participants with special needs helped plant trees at different recreation centers.

City plans softball tournament

The city of Henderson is gearing up for its 25th annual Midnite Madness 1-Pitch Softball Tournament scheduled for July 5 and 6 at the Arroyo Grande Sports Complex, 298 Arroyo Grande Blvd.; the Dos Escuelas Park, 1 Golden View St.; and the Russell Road Recreation Complex, 5901 E. Russell Road.

The event is an all-night tournament where players pitch to their own teams in 30-minute games.

Registration costs $250 per team.

BARIATRIC WEIGHT LOSS SEMINAR SET
FOR JUNE 20 at green valley library

HELP OF SOUTHERN NEVADA LAUNCHES BOTTLED WATER PROGRAM FOR HOMELESS

HELP of Southern Nevada invites the community to be part of its HELP2O campaign, which donates bottled water to the homeless.

Patrons can donate water at any area Whole Foods Market through Aug. 31. For every bottle of Real Water purchased at Whole Foods Market during the campaign, Real Water will donate a bottle.

Collection points for donated water include: Whole Foods Fort Apache, 8855 W. Charleston Blvd.; Whole Foods Tenaya, 7250 W. Lake Mead Blvd.; Whole Foods Town Square, 6689 Las Vegas Blvd. South; and Whole Foods Henderson, 100 S. Green Valley Parkway.

FUNDRAISER TO HELP FIGHT CANCER

COMMUNITY ASSOCIATIONS INSTITUTE ACCEPTING AWARD NOMINATIONS

The Nevada chapter of the Community Associations Institute is accepting nominations for individuals and charities statewide for its annual Ordinary People Extraordinary Measures Awards. The institute is a trade organization representing homeowners, homeowners associations, community managers and industry partners. Nominations are due July 15. COOPERATIVE EXTENSION WORKSHOP
TO FOCUS ON IRRIGATING SMALL GARDENS

A workshop titled Gardening in Small Places: Understanding Your Irrigation is scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon June 22 at the Clark County Cooperative Extension’s Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road. ACTIVIST TO SPEAK ON IRAN

Moniru Ravanipur is expected to speak at 2:30 p.m. June 26 at the Paseo Verde Library, 280 S. Green Valley Parkway, as part of the local authors series put on by Henderson Libraries.

Ravanipur is planning to discuss her role as one of the 17 activists who faced trial in Iran for participation in the 2000 Berlin Conference, in which people were accused of taking part in anti-Iran propaganda.

DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE recognizes
HENDERSON POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Henderson Police Department was selected to participate in a nationwide study by the Department of Justice’s National Institute of Justice.

About 100 departments in the country were selected.

As part of the survey, when people request police services or have encounters with officers, they may be asked to rate their interactions.

The study is expected to take place this summer.

WATER SAFETY DAY SCHEDULED
AT Three henderson SITES

The city of Henderson has scheduled its Rad Tad Water Safety Day for 1 p.m. June 29 at the Wells Outdoor Swimming Pool, 1650 Price St.

The event is expected to include demonstrations on first aid and basic water rescue.

Other demonstrations are scheduled on July 12 at the Whitney Ranch Activity Pool, 1575 Galleria Drive, and July 20 at the Henderson Multigenerational Activity Pool, 250 S. Green Valley Parkway.
