Historic downtown business: The Review-Journal
February 28, 2009 - 8:04 am
Professor Joe, the Review-Journal archivist, sent along for your viewing pleasure these two old pictures of the newspaper building back when we were on Main Street.
The first newspaper printed in the 737 North Main Street building was Jan. 2, 1951. (Anybody still have a copy of that issue?) Before that, the newspaper was located on South Main Street. Now, of course, the Review-Journal is located on West Bonanza and is easily seen by motorists navigating the "Spaghetti Bowl" interchange. The Review-Journal, if you don't know, is the oldest newspaper in Las Vegas, tracing its roots to just before the birth of the city.
The expansion of the North Main Street building took place in the late 50s. Be sure to take a look at the old cars parked nearby. How'd you like to have a few of those in the garage?
The folks standing in the expansion photo are contractors and architects, though we don't know for sure. If you recognize any of them, please let us know so that we can note it in our files.
