Jersey couple relocates to Sun City Mesquite house
Former New Jersey residents John and Dorothy Dewan searched nationwide throughout various age-qualified developments before finding what they wanted at Del Webb's Sun City Mesquite community in Mesquite.
The community is located about 80 miles north of Las Vegas and just 30 minutes south of St. George, Utah. It offers a selection of 14 single-story designs ranging from 1,200 to 3,100 square feet with two- or three-car garages. Prices start in the low $180,000s.
"I retired 10 years ago and around that time we began considering everywhere from South Carolina to Palm Springs to Las Vegas for our retirement destination," John Dewan said. "Based on what we saw among the developments we looked at, we eventually confined our search specifically to Del Webb communities because of the obvious quality incorporated in their planning and design and their reputation for quality and service."
During a visit here in 2007, the Dewans decided it was time to make their move.
"We went back to Sun City Anthem, which was then nearly completed, and while showing us the available homes, the sales associate mentioned that if we'd like more of a small-town feel, we might consider Sun City Mesquite, another active-adult community being developed by Del Webb about 80 miles north," Dewan said.
"So we decided take a ride up there and as soon as we drove into Mesquite, we just fell in love with the town. It had an intimate feel, yet there were casinos, fabulous golf opportunities and so many other attractions and conveniences we knew we'd want close to home."
The Dewans, who live with Dorothy's 97-year-old father, choose the Willow design. The home measures 2,409 square feet with three bedrooms, 21/2 baths, great room, den, breakfast nook, covered patio and an attached, two-car garage.
"We were first struck by the openness of the Willow design," Dewan said. "It's just perfect for us, with a roomy kitchen, open great room, spacious-feeling living areas and good separation between the master suite and the secondary bedrooms, which affords more privacy for us, for my father-in-law and for friends and relatives when they come to visit."
The Dewans said the move made good money sense, too.
"As far as energy efficiency, we are super happy with our utility bills here. In fact, they are about half of what we were paying in New Jersey, which is a very significant savings," Dewan said.
"All in all, we are totally happy with our decision to buy our home in Sun City Mesquite and intend to enjoy living here for many years to come."
Residents have private access to a 30,000-square-foot community recreation center. Inside, it features a large, climate-controlled swimming pool, heated spa, two-story fitness center with an upper-level walking track, kitchen, central hall, billiards room, coffee lounge with a plasma screen television, computer kiosks and rooms designated for various classes, hobbies and clubs.
Private outdoor features for residents and their guests include an 18-hole putting course, walking trails, pool, two heated spas and tennis, bocce and pickle ball courts.
A major highlight of the community is Conestoga -- an 18-hole, championship, daily-fee golf course, -- managed my Troon Golf, which will be open to public play and is set for completion later this year.
