Kidney transplant arranged over Craigslist canceled
A kidney transplant of two strangers who met through a Craigslist ad has been canceled, CBS reported.
The two strangers from New Jersey, Glenn Calderbank and Nina Saria, met after Saria's husband posted an ad on Craigslist searching for a "brave person" to donate a kidney to his wife who suffers from autoimmune disease.
By mistake, the ad landed in the "materials" section of the website where a contractor, Calderbank, saw the posting.
Calderbank, who said he believes he was destined to see the ad because his first wife, Jessica, suffered from kidney failure and later passed away after going through dialysis and receiving a transplant that her body rejected, said he knew it was a match from the second he saw the posting.
“I remember once when [Jessica] was in the hospital, I said if I could be there instead of you I would. She’s probably laughing and saying, ‘here’s your chance’," Calderbank said.
“There’s no word for me to express how thankful I am,” Saria said. “I wanted to be able to see my child grow, I wanted to see him in the future. I didn’t want to die.”
The surgery scheduled for Tuesday was canceled Monday due to "unforeseen circumstances."
According to a statement from the Hospital at the University of Pennsylavania, both patients are in good condition. No words has been given as to when or if the transplant would be rescheduled.
