Last season a learning experience for player
February 28, 2011 - 7:48 pm
UNLV senior wide receiver Phillip Payne called last football season a learning experience.
He was suspended for two games for negative tweets regarding the coaching staff, and had been off limits to the media until today's first spring practice session.
"It was a reality check," said Payne, a Western High School graduate. "I learned to keep my mouth shut. I learned to do what you have to do. I learned to do the little things."
Athletes all over the country have discovered the consequences of sites such as Twitter.com and Facebook.com when controversial opinions are expressed.
"I learned from it first hand," Payne said. "I wish I didn't."
MOVING AROUND
In addition to senior C.J. Cox switching from running back to linebacker, UNLV made some other roster adjustments. Perhaps the most notable was moving redshirt freshman Taylor Spencer, who went to Bishop Gorman High, from safety to wide receiver.
"He did some decent things on the back end on defense last fall, but he looks a little more natural right now at receiver," coach Bobby Hauck said.
Junior Aaron Reed, a Silverado High product, moved from wide receiver to tight end. Senior Chris Jones, who attended Shadow Ridge High, is working at safety and linebacker.
Also, defensive lineman Kjelby Oiland transferred to Montana, and safety Courtney Bridget left the team.
ODDS AND ENDS
Senior linebacker Nate Carter, a Las Vegas High grad, will wear the "Battle Born" No. 36 jersey next season. It goes to a player from the state who is noted for spirit and pride. ... Tuesday's practice is at 3:45 p.m.. UNLV takes off Wednesday before going into pads Thursday. All practices are open to the public, but cell phones are not allowed to be used.
