Last woman player eliminated at main event

The last woman standing has been eliminated from the World Series of Poker’s main event.

Less than half an hour after play began in the $10,000 no-limit hold’em world championship Wednesday, Leo Margets of Barcelona, Spain, busted out in 27th place, the day’s first elimination.

Margets earned $352,832 for her efforts.

Last year, Tiffany Michelle placed 17th in the main event, the best showing by a woman since Annie Duke placed 10th in 2000. Barbara Enright remains the only woman to ever reach the main event’s final table, placing 5th in 1995.

Play began with 27 players with only two eliminations in the first hour.

The players are competing today at the Rio for a spot at the final table of nine, which will be determined sometime tonight. If play is anything like in previous years, the final nine won’t be seated until early Thursday morning.

The nine players will return to the Rio in November to play for competitive poker’s ultimate title. The winner will take home $8.55 million while all nine players are guaranteed at least $1.26 million.
