‘Like Water for Chocolate’ a tasty blend

Culture, romance, and food. Laura Esquivel’s “Like Water for Chocolate” manages to combine all three ingredients into a charming novel.
Each of her delectable chapters starts off with a recipe that foreshadows the happenings of that month. These dishes are mixed together with a cast of quixotic characters to create a masterpiece of magical realism.
“Like Water for Chocolate” tells the story of a Mexican family during the revolution, focusing on the unfortunate situation of Tita and Pedro, a couple who despite their fierce love are separated by a family tradition that binds Tita to a life of servitude to her ungrateful mother. This is further complicated by Pedro’s marriage to Tita’s elder sister.
The plot continues to unravel the many mysteries of the La Garza family, finishing with an enthralling scene that only Esquivel could create.
This unpredictable book is absolutely a must-read for any book lover.
