Local finds a $9 room available downtown

Like many Las Vegans, my friend Rich is staying home this recession summer for a “staycation” in an effort to save a little cash.

In recent weeks he’s stayed at several hotels from Primm to downtown. Through Orbitz he found rooms at the Tropicana for $30 a night. But that’s nothing compared to the rate he discovered at the Gold Spike at 400 Ogden Ave.

Rich tells me the diminutive low-roller downtown casino with 108 rooms recently had a room available for as low as $9 a night.

That’s right. $9.

Granted, the Gold Spike won't be confused with the Bellagio. But you can't buy much more than a cup of coffee at the Bellagio for $9.
