Mad Mud Run preparations under way in Summerlin

The master-planned community of Summerlin is preparing for the community's second annual Mad Mud Run May 22. Hundreds of outdoor enthusiasts attendants are already registered to compete in Las Vegas' messiest 4-mile run and registration is still open.

"It's a wildly entertaining event," said Nikkole Liesse, marketing director for Summerlin.

"Participants are encouraged to come dressed in costumes, spectators are encouraged to bring water guns and squirt the runners, and everyone is encouraged to get dirty and muddy. It's a fun, interactive event for all ages."

Mad Mud Run kicks off at The Vistas Community Park, 11311 Alta Drive with the first wave of runners leaving the park at 8 a.m.

Participants can run solo or as a group along a 4-mile course with boot-camp style obstacles, including hay bale hurdles, low walls and a crawl through a 40-foot long mud pit.

Awards will be presented to the top finishers in the one-, two- and five- person divisions in addition to the best crowd-pleasing costume. The registration fee is $60 per participant with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Safe Nest, a local nonprofit organization founded in 1977 that offers shelter for battered women and children.

Younger participants are invited to participate in the Mud Puppy Splash beginning at 9:30 a.m. The 100-meter course is perfect for youth, 4 to 12, who also want to take a crawl through the mud pit. Registration for the Mud Puppy Splash is $15 per child and is limited to the first 200 participants.
