Man vandalizes own truck, blames ‘Black Lives Matter’ supporters
A Texas man was arrested Friday after he allegedly defaced his own truck and blamed the vandalism on supporters of the "Black Lives Matter" movement.
Scott Lattin, a disabled veteran from Whitney, Texas, reported to KDFW that "Black Lives Matter" was spray painted on his truck after he had written "Police Lives Matter" on the vehicle's back window.
"They need support so they can feel what they do, putting their lives on the line everyday. It's the only truck we have and because of this, it's totaled now." Lattin told the station.
After KDFW aired the report, with the help of a GoFundMe campaign, the family was able to raise $5,855 in donations to fix the vehicle. According to the campaign, the family was asking for $8,000.
After footage of the damaged truck surfaced, Whitney Police noticed a difference between the damage seen by police and the damage that was shown in the news segment.
In a statement to KDFW, police Chief Chris Bently said, "We had initial video when the officers took the report and then when we saw your story on Channel 4. When we looked at those two videos, there were some differences in those and that led us to take the investigation into a different direction.”
According to Bently, when police investigated the vandalism, the truck did not have any damage to the inside of the truck. However, in the footage filmed by the news, the truck's seats had been slashed and the glove box was ripped off.
As stated in court documents, Lattin later admitted to vandalizing his own vehicle for insurance reasons, Gawker reported.
