‘Marley & Me’: The book, the movie, meet the author
"Life and love with the world's worst dog,” “Marley & Me” is subtitled, and yeah, that pretty much sums it up.
If you've ever loved and been loved by a dog, you'll likely see something of him or her in Marley and something of yourself in author John Grogan.
Marley was an irrepressible, 97-pound yellow Labrador retriever — an affectionate pile of fur with a personality dog trainers might call “challenging” — who grew up with Grogan and his wife and eventually their children, providing emotional support , protection, laughs and, yes, plenty of frustration along the way. As Marley's story and his life inevitably draw to a close, it becomes obvious just how much the family learned from their canine companion — lessons that will literally last throughout their lives.
The movie based on the book, starring Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston, is scheduled to open on Christmas Day, but in the meantime, here's some good news for Southern Nevada fans of "Marley & Me": Grogan will appear at a book sale and signing at 1 p.m. (gates open at noon) Oct. 26 at the Henderson Pavilion, 200 S. Green Valley Parkway in Henderson. Free tickets (limit of 10 per person) are available at the Gibson, Malcolm, Paseo Verde and Pittman libraries in Henderson and at the Henderson Pavilion box office and will be available at the door. For more information, call Laurie Orton of Henderson Libraries at 263-7522.
The author signing is part of One Book Henderson, which is encouraging residents to read and discuss "Marley & Me." Events are scheduled throughout October. One Book Henderson kicks off with an all-day carnival, "Who Let the Dogs Out," at 10 a.m. Oct. 4 at Henderson Pavilion. The event is free and open to the public and their dogs.
