Marriage is hard and ‘The Kids Are All Right’
Caught the movie "The Kids Are All Right" last weekend while on the road. Not sure when this movie hits Las Vegas theaters, but all Complete Las Vegans will want to try to catch it when it does.
Because it is about two lesbians raising two kids, it's tempting to say that it will win a lot of awards. You know how Hollywood is.
But the truth is this will win a lot awards simply because it's a darn good movie. It underlines what all parents everywhere know -- "marriage is hard" -- and it avoids the pitfall of becoming too lesbian lifestyle preachy and simply winds up being a common and endearing story.
The three main characters, Annette Bening, Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo do fine jobs. The movie wouldn't work as well without Ruffalo's spot-on performance, it seems to me. (Hey, if you want a better description and review, see a professional reviewer like Carol Cling. I'm just a moviegoer who wants to tell you about a movie he liked.)
I found myself halfway through the movie thinking less about the gender of the central couple and more about their roles as parents.
Which I suspect was the director's point.
Anyway, catch this movie when it hits Las Vegas.
Postscript -- Carol Cling tells me that "The Kids Are All Right" begins Friday at the Suncoast theaters. She will review the flick in Friday's Neon where she tells me I can read her "extremely enthusiastic impressions then". I can't wait.
