MORNING IN NEVADA: Beatty Days Shines in the Rain

BEATTY — An early November rainstorm couldn’t dampen the fun Saturday at the annual Beatty Days parade and celebration 100 miles north of Las Vegas on U.S. 95.

My 12-year-old daughter Amelia, who has plenty of reasons to cheer after surviving cancer, served as the “Junior Grand Marshall” and rode with her folks in a 1915 Coca-Cola red Model T. As ever, the people were gracious, and the burgers with grilled onions at the Lions Club barbecue were top notch.

Las Vegan Bob Ott has lived in Southern Nevada 30 years, but found himself reminiscing about his Ohio youth after making his first visit to Beatty Days.

“We lived in small towns when I was a kid,” Ott said as the storm clouds boiled over just after the end of the parade. “This is what I call old Americana.”

Rain fell on the annual bed races, but that didn’t stop the competition from rattling down the street lined with onlookers.

   Check out tomorrow's schedule.
