MORNING LINE: Magnificent Maddux retires

Valley High graduate Greg Maddux announces his retirement at baseball’s winter meetings Monday in Las Vegas after 22 seasons, 355 wins, four Cy Young Awards, 18 Gold Gloves, and nine All-Star appearances.

I’ll never forget covering Valley’s state championship game in 1984 at UNLV. Everyone present knew Maddux was a big leaguer in the making. And he wasn’t the biggest or strongest kid on the field even then.
