MORNING LINE: Rural schools could close

Here’s something dear to my heart and near to my home: the potential closure of Lundy Elementary in Kyle Canyon.
A meeting set for 6 tonight at the school will bring together neighbors, parents and students with administrators from the Clark County School District to discuss the potential closure as a cost-saving measure.
Trouble is, the district’s numbers aren’t reliable. Its claim that each student receives more than $20,000 a year in value (as opposed to the approximately $7,000 average) is countered by the reality that the district plans to keep that building open and operating as a retreat/seminar center. The lone teacher at Lundy will be offered a job at another school. And I hear the two staffers and maintenance man also will be offered employment.
CCSD trustees are scheduled to vote on whether to close Lundy and Goodsprings’ historic school on Jan. 22.
Will no one start questioning why the CCSD is so top heavy with administrators and why some of its principals are allowed to blow out their budgets in the final weeks of school instead of return the unused portions to the district?
There are so many legitimate areas of concern that it’s ridiculous to pick on two tiny schools located miles from the real problem.
But they are symbols, and the Legislature is about to convene, and you know how that goes.
