Mountain’s Edge spreads cheer

Mountain's Edge, a new 3,500-acre master-planned community in the southwestern part of the Las Vegas Valley, will host holiday caroling Dec. 12 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at its Home Search Café with hot apple cider and hot chocolate served. Santa Claus will make a special appearance.

The community just wrapped up its Discovery Days, a series of fall promotional events, which attracted several thousand visitors.

The American Heart Association's Heart Walk kicked off the series Oct 13. The event drew more than 3,200 participants and raised more than $350,000 for the organization's efforts to battle cardiovascular disease.

"Launching Discovery Days with the Heart Walk was a great way for thousands of people to see how beautiful Mountain's Edge really is, from our park to the landscaped streets, as well as the distinctive neighborhoods created by builders in the community," said Deonna Stocker, manager of the Home Search Café at Mountain's Edge.

Other events included a fall festival, which was held at the community's William Wright Elementary School Oct. 24; and a scavenger hunt and Halloween costume contest held the following weekend at Exploration Park.

Participants had the opportunity to tour more than 100 model homes being sold by builders including Amstar Homes, Avante Homes, Beazer Homes, D.R. Horton, Engle Homes, KB Home, Kimball Hill Homes, Lennar Homes, Meritage Homes, Pardee Homes, Pulte Homes, R/S Development, Ryland Homes, Toll Brothers, Warmington Homes Nevada and Woodside Homes.

Additionally, Mountain's Edge hosted this year's final installment of the Desert Demonstration Garden Series Nov. 17. This event focused on winterizing desert landscape and protecting new and existing drought-tolerant plants from freezing. Guidance also was given on irrigation protection and how to appropriately water during this time of year. The quarterly events teach residents and visitors how to landscape yards that are water-smart year round.

The Demonstration Garden was built as a resource center for residents to learn about various drought-tolerant plant materials that provide color and texture during all four seasons. At the Garden, residents can walk along paths filled with desert-adaptable landscaping, all of which are identified so that people can request them at a nursery.

Many of the Discovery Days events were held at Exploration Park, which is the first of six parks planned for the master-planned community. The most visible feature of Exploration Park is a Western Theme Park that blends natural elements of the region's geography and history.

For those interested in hikes and scenic walks, Exploration Peak is Nevada's first mountain park, with several trails that lead to the top of 2,846-foot Exploration Peak. The series of hiking trails were designed for people of all ages, and include ramadas at two different stages to serve as shady rest areas.

When fully developed, Mountain's Edge is planned to have four elementary schools. One is already open and a second is under construction.

Additionally, two middle schools and a high school are planned. The community is designed to have a fire station, shopping centers, restaurants and commercial office space.
