MOVIES: An All-Star Lineup
The 10th annual CineVegas film festival, which in the past has honored such starry types as Dustin Hoffman, Anthony Hopkins, Holly Hunter, Jack Nicholson, Helen Mirren, Sean Penn and Christopher Walken (not to mention Dennis Hopper, who now chairs CineVegas' Creative Advisory Board), rolls a six with this year's honoree lineup.
Oscar-winner Anjelica Huston will accept the festival's Marquee Award; her co-star in "Choke" (one of the festival's selections), Sam Rockwell, joins Don Cheadle, Viggo Mortensen and Rosario Dawson as recipients of the festival's Half-Life Award, for those in the midst of their notable careers. And James Caan, whose made-in-Vegas credits range from "Honeymoon in Vegas" to the "Las Vegas" TV series, receives a special Vegas Icon Award honoring his Glitter City connections.
They'll receive their awards poolside at Planet Hollywood June 20, but the honorees also will participate in open-to-the-public chat sessions June 20 and 21, the festival's closing days. Given their individual and collective histories, those conversations should be enlightening — and raucously entertaining.
Elsewhere on the CineVegas front, fans of the Beatles (and Cirque du Soleil's Beatles-themed Mirage show "Love") will explore the show's genesis thanks to the documentary "All Together Now," which will screen twice in the festival's "Vegas Uncovered" section devoted to Las Vegas-themed documentaries.
CineVegas runs June 12-21 at the Palms' Brenden Theatres; click on www.cinevegas.com for tickets and additional festival information. (And, of course, stay tuned to the Review-Journal and Vegas Voice for ongoing festival coverage.)
