MOVIES: Cirque storms the multiplex

There's no Cirque du Soleil shortage in Las Vegas ... not with the troupe ensconced in five Strip showrooms. (Six, if you count the Luxor's upcoming Criss Angel show, "Believe.")
Elsewhere, however, Cirque remains an exotic diversion — which accounts for a new "concert event," titled "Delirium," storming multiplexes later this month. Including Las Vegas' Rave Town Square, Regal's Colonnade, Fiesta Henderson and Red Rock locations and Century's Santa Fe and South Point multiplexes.
Billed as "Cinema for the Senses," the filmed show — which toured North America and international markets through April — combines music, dance, theater and multimedia. It's "driven by an urban tribal beat," according to the show's press release, and explores "the quest for balance in a world that is increasingly out of sync with reality. It pushes the limit of arena performance through technical magnitude, human introspection and creative prowess."
The storyline focuses on a city guy named Bill, whose urban life "draws him into an imaginary, virtual world" where "he meets myriad characters that bring him, little by little, to the cusp of growth and change."
In a first for Cirque, music — not acrobatics — drives the show, featuring 21 remixed melodies that "mark a significant departure from the music Cirque du Soleil fans have come to expect."
Six musicians, six singers, 12 dancers, nine acrobats and three "main characters" perform throughout the show, which includes acrobatic dances along with classic Cirque aerial, "acrosport" and hand-balancing acts.
Showtimes are 7 p.m. Aug. 20 and 21; Aug. 23 and 24 showtimes are noon at Colonnade, Fiesta and Red Rock, 1 p.m. at Town Square and 2 p.m. at Santa Fe and South Point. Tickets are $20 and are available online at delirium.thehotticket.net.
