MOVIES: Special screenings — ‘Grease’ is the word, so Rave on
It’s the one that you want: The singalong edition of “Grease” dances into Vegas July 30 for a one-weekend-only visit.
So if you’ve ever wanted to debut your own singalong-with-the-stars stylings of “Hopelessly Devoted to You” or “You’re the One That I Want,” now’s your chance.
The 1978 musical smash, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, will hit the screen at the Rave Town Square multiplex for five shows: 5 and 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 30, and Saturday, July 31, plus a 2 p.m. matinee Sunday, Aug. 1.
On-screen lyrics will enable audiences to sing along with teen dream Danny Zuko (Travolta), good girl Sandy Olsson (Newton-John) and such Rydell High regulars as Betty Rizzo (acerbic, not to mention way-past-high-school-age, Stockard Channing), Kenicke (a pre-”Taxi,” pre-rehab Jeff Conaway), Frenchie (Didi Conn), plus old-timers Eve Arden and Sid Caesar as Rydell’s principal and coach, respectively, and ex-teenthrob Frankie Avalon as “Grease’s” resident Teen Angel.
For a time, “Grease” was No. 3 on the list of all-time box-office hits, behind 1977’s original “Star Wars” (now known, to no one but George Lucas, as “Episode IV: A New Hope”) and 1975’s “Jaws.” It returned to theaters in 1998 to mark its 20th anniversary; the 1972 stage original was, for a time, Broadway’s longest-running show. (It’s now No. 13; “Phantom of the Opera,” which opened in 1988 and is still running, rules as Broadway’s top attraction.)
Tickets for the singalong version will go on sale Friday, July 23, for the three-day “Grease” return. They’ll be available at the Rave box office or online at www.movietickets.com.
