MOVIES: ‘Yonkers Joe’ returns to Vegas — under the stars

The CineVegas film festival doesn't kick off until early June, but the festival folks aren't waiting around — they just keep sponsoring film series. There's an ongoing screening series at the Palms, along with revivals of past CineVegas selections at the Clark County Library.
And the Springs Preserve (site of an earlier CineVegas series devoted to "green" films) returns to the CineVegas spotlight at the site of a new "CineVegas Under the Stars" program, which kicks off at 8 p.m. Saturday (April 11) with "Yonkers Joe," pictured at right, a made-in-Vegas drama about an old-school dice hustler (Chazz Palminteri) forced to reconnect with his mentally challenged son (Tom Guiry), Christine Lahti, Linus Roache and Michael Lerner co-star in the movie, from locally based producer Trent Othick. "Yonkers Joe" returns to Las Vegas following a successful weeklong run at the South Point in early March.
The once-a-month Springs Preserve series continues May 15, June 27 and July 11 with as yet undetermined titles (at least one of which will be a family film, according to the CineVegas folks). Check online at www.cinevegas.com/underthestars for updates.
Tickets are $10; "Food and a Flick" packages, with preshow dinner at the preserve's Wolfgang Puck café, are $25. Outside food and beverages are not permitted, but snacks and drinks may be purchased in the amphitheater. Filmgoers are encouraged to bring blankets and low chairs to the screening.
