Good Samaritan Lutheran Church, 8425 W. Windmill Lane, plans to host a sew-a-thon to benefit young girls in Africa from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday .
The effort is being organized by Las Vegas resident and church member Jill Gertz. She said she had the idea after a representative from Hope For Children International spoke at the church about making a difference in countries such as Africa. I made me really want to do something, Gertz said.
She visited the groups website and learned about the Dress A Girl Around The World program, which encourages people to make dresses for toddlers to teens from gently used and new materials such as pillowcases.
The goal is to produce 100 dresses for the program. People are asked to donate new and clean and gently used pillowcases, tank tops and T-shirts. Eight sewing machines will be available for use at the event. Volunteers also will sort, fold, iron and cut material.
