Artist’s painting to be auctioned
to help former showgirl

In honor of the show’s 11th anniversary, “X Burlesque” plans to auction an original painting of the X Girls by Henderson artist Terry Ritter. All proceeds from the auction are to be donated to Shellee Renee, a former Las Vegas showgirl who is recovering from breast cancer. A silent auction of the painting is scheduled for Wednesday. A copy of the original work is expected to remain on display in the X Showroom at the Flamingo, 3555 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

FOOTHILL HIGH SCHOOL BAND TO MARCH
IN 2014 MACY’S THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE

The Foothill High School marching band was one of 10 marching bands nationwide selected to perform in the 2014 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Students at Foothill, 800 College Drive, were told April 12 at a surprise assembly. Hundreds of schools applied for the parade.

GROUP HOSTS COFFEE MIXER

The Desert Newcomers Club is scheduled to host its monthly coffee meeting at 10 a.m. Thursday at Green Valley United Methodist Church, 2200 Robindale Road.

The event is expected to have a speaker from Shotokan Karate to talk about self-defense at any age.

HENDERSON PLANS TO HOST
BIRD CELEBRATION Saturday

The city of Henderson is scheduled to host its Bird Celebration at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve, 350 E. Galleria Drive.

The event is expected to include educational games, birding basic workshops, self-guided and staff-led tours and hands-on exhibits.

MYSTERY AUCTION EXPECTED
TO RAISE MONEY FOR S.A.F.E. HOUSE

The GFWC Green Valley Woman’s Club is scheduled to host a mystery auction from 6 to 8 p.m. April 30 at the Mountain View Clubhouse, 148 Day St.

All proceeds raised are expected to go to S.A.F.E. House.

VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR VETERANS COURT

The Henderson Municipal Court is seeking volunteers who can mentor defendants enrolled in the Veterans Treatment Court.

The court is an alternative sentencing program for military veterans who might have committed misdemeanors as a result of readjusting to civilian life.

Volunteers are expected to work with veterans to navigate them through the program.

HENDERSON SHINES INVITES COMMUNITY
TO DROP OFF TRASH AND RECYCLABLE ITEMS

Henderson Shines is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 4 at the Henderson Pavilion, 200 S. Green Valley Parkway.

The neighborhood cleanup allows residents to drop off items to be recycled, donated or disposed of.

People have the opportunity to safely dispose of items such as batteries, paint, cellphones or electronics.

Items donated are expected to go to Opportunity Village. Henderson District Public Libraries is planning to collect books in good condition.

FILMS TO SPOTLIGHT STUDENTS’ CREATIVITY

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Department of Film is set to present Spring Flicks 2013, a showcase of the department’s creative efforts, from 6 to 11 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday on the first floor of the CBC building on the campus, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway.

Awards will be announced following April 28’s film screenings.

DJS FOR PJS TO HOST PAJAMA DRIVE FRIDAY

The 11th annual DJS for PJS event is scheduled for 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday. The daylong event is designed to collect new pajamas for children in crisis and benefits charities throughout the Las Vegas Valley.

Local disc jockeys will encourage corporate and individual donations by broadcasting on-site from four Kohl’s stores: in Henderson at 30 N. Valle Verde Drive; in the Summerlin area at 8671 W. Charleston Blvd.; in Centennial Hills at 6700 N. Durango Drive; and in southwest Las Vegas at 4250 Blue Diamond Road.

The aim is to collect 8,000 pairs of pajamas.

NATHAN ADELSON HOSPICE PLANS BUTTERFLY RELEASE AT SYMPHONY PARK

Nathan Adelson Hospice plans to host its annual Butterfly Release May 5 at Symphony Park, 361 Symphony Park Ave., with a ceremony starting at 2 p.m. and the release of the butterflies at 2:30 p.m. The event will consist of a nondenominational dedication, followed by the release of live butterflies in honor and/or memory of loved ones.

Butterflies are $25. Funds raised will support the hospice’s services.

POLICE DEPARTMENT HONORS CIVILIANS AND EMPLOYEES

The Henderson Police Department held its annual commendation ceremony April 7.

The event honored residents, officers and civilian employees for their contributions to the community.

Awards included Police Officer of the Year, Michael Wolff; Corrections Officer of the Year, Ann Waite; Civilian Employee of the Year, Kevin Murphy; and Life Saving Awards for officers and civilians, Barbara Chirico, officer Jaime Clear and officer Erich Tschirgi.
