FAIRYTALE BALLET SET AT LOCAL CENTER

Child's Play, 7260 S. Cimarron Road, Suite 100, is scheduled to host a Fairytale Ballet class for children 24 to 36 months at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Classes run in six-week increments and vary in cost. The center offers classes in dance, yoga, gymnastics, arts and languages.

Water Authority accepting nominations for Landscape Awards

The Southern Nevada Water Authority's 13th annual Landscape Awards competition is taking applications.

The contest is open to local residents and landscape professionals interested in showing off their water-efficient landscapes.

Entries due SATURDAY AND SUNDAY in Red Rock Canyon photo contest

The Red Rock Canyon Annual Photo Contest has been held since 2002. This year's entries will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center.

Categories are Nature, Wildlife, Creative and Monochromatic. First prize is $100. There is a ceiling cap of 100 entries per category. A teen nature/wildlife category has a top prize of $50.

McFadden's celebrating graduation

McFadden's Restaurant and Saloon at the Rio, 3700 W. Flamingo Road, is celebrating the end of the school year Saturday with a "UNLV Grad Bash" to honor Las Vegas' most recent graduates. McFadden's is inviting all recent UNLV grads, their friends and families to celebrate graduation. All UNLV grads will drink free from 10 p.m. until 1 a.m., and anyone wearing UNLV gear will receive a free shot. Guests can gather after commencement for a pregame open bar from 8 to 10 p.m. for $15. The party continues with an open bar from 10 p.m. until 1 a.m. for $20 for women and $30 for men.

Help st amp out hunger this weekend

Residents are asked to leave non-perishable food items at their mailbox Saturday for their letter carrier to pick up and deliver to a local food or pantry, or stop by any Albertsons/Sav-on by Saturday and donate money at the register and drop off donations of non-perishable food items.

More than 300,000 people in Southern Nevada struggle with hunger every day -- one out of every six people. Most needed items include canned meat, canned tuna, canned ham, canned salmon, canned stew, peanut butter, pasta swirls and beef (pop top), beans and franks (pop top), Vienna sausage, cereal boxes (single-serving), beans, Bisquick, oatmeal, sugar and flour.

TEEN JOB FAIR scheduled AT LIBRARY

The Spring Valley Library, 4280 S. Jones Blvd., is scheduled to host a Teen Job Fair at 1 p.m. May 20. Teens will get guidance on how to create a resume, fill out an application and interview for a position. The event is for those ages 16 to 18 only. For more information, call 507-3820.

Buy a pin to help a child

During May, all Short Line Express convenience stores will be selling Yogi Bear and Kermit paper hearts, and select stores will be selling various styles of gold heart pins to raise money in support of Variety-the Children's Charity. Variety helps children with special needs in Southern Nevada. For more information , visit varietysn.org.

Patrons can purchase a paper heart for $1 or a gold heart pin for $2.

Mommy & Me West collects food for Three Square

On April 9, Mommy & Me West held a donation drive benefiting Three Square food bank. The final amounts were 378 pounds of donation items and $65 in cash.

Mommy & Me West organized a similar donation drive for Three Square in October. For that, it collected 246 pounds of food and $50 in cash.

Mommy & Me West is a nonprofit parents organization that offers a monthly calendar full of daily citywide activities and events. The group is open to children from birth through kindergarten.

Desert Newcomers to host spring fashion show at Wildhorse Golf Club

A spring fashion show featuring Alfred Dunner attire is planned from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 18 by the Desert Newcomers Club Inc. The show is scheduled at the Wildhorse Golf Club, 2100 W. Warm Springs Road.

Desert Newcomers Club Inc. is a social women's organization for those who have lived in the Las Vegas area for three years or less and want to meet new friends.

Palms to sell cabanas for charity

Palms Pool & Bungalows inside the Palms, 4321 W. Flamingo Road, has scheduled Cabanas for a Cause every Monday, beginning May 23. The community-driven project will donate all cabana sales for the day to a nonprofit charity, with each week dedicated to a different organization or local chapter throughout the Valley. Cabanas will be specially priced at $100 each, upon availability. Special guest DJs are scheduled to perform from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Charities include Links for Life, Three Square, the Special Olympics, Noah's Animal House and many more.

Get $75 mammograms in May

Now through May 31, The Breast Center at Sunrise, 3006 S. Maryland Parkway, Suite 250; Southern Hills Hospital, 9300 W. Sunset Road, and Red Rock Radiology, 7130 Smoke Ranch Road, are offering a special $75 digital screening mammogram, without a physician's referral, for any woman at least 40 years old.

This program is most beneficial to women who may be uninsured or underinsured. If you have insurance, check with your provider. You may find that your mammogram is fully covered.

United Way to announce fundraising results MAY 25

United Way of Southern Nevada is set to hold its campaign finale at 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 25 at the Gold Coast, 4000 W. Flamingo Road. Presented by sponsors NV Energy, Southwest Gas Corp. and USAA Savings Bank, United Way will announce the community's impact on the total dollars raised during the annual campaign season. Soles4Souls seeks shoe donations

Soles4Souls is asking for shoe donations. It collects and distributes usable shoes to people in need around the world.

Since 2005, Soles4Souls has given away more than 13 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes (one pair every seven seconds). The shoes have been distributed in 125 countries, including Haiti, Kenya, Nepal and the United States.

Clothes4Souls, a new division of Soles4Souls, provides hope for hurting people through the gift of new clothing from manufacturers, designers and retailers. Those who graciously give (rather than destroy) unused inventory are assured their donations are distributed to people around the world living in desperate need.

HIGH SCHOOL REUNIONS SEEK CLASS OF '45 MEMBERS from western, clark

The Western and Clark High Schools Classes of 1967 plan to celebrate their 45th reunion Oct. 5 and 6. They are asking for help to find classmates. Between the two schools, there were more than 950 graduating students, approximately 100 of whom are believed to be deceased. Approximately 300 have been located.

Nevada Cancer Institute offers smoking cessation courses

The Nevada Cancer Institute is offering A Smoke-Free Life, a free six-week tobacco cessation course for companies looking to reduce health care costs.

A Smoke-Free Life realistically addresses the challenges of ending tobacco use. A certified tobacco treatment specialist will help employees quit successfully by creating a quit plan, providing information on nicotine replacement therapy and helping participants develop the coping skills to stay smoke-free.

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, killing approximately 1,200 people every day, which is more than alcohol, AIDS, motor vehicle crashes, illegal drugs, murders and suicides combined. Each year, Nevada spends $565 million in health care costs that are directly related to smoking. Only 22 percent of Nevadans currently smoke, according to Dr. John Ruckdeschel, director and CEO of NVCI.

Baby's Bounty asks for donations of baby items

Baby's Bounty, 2295 Renaissance Drive, Suite D, is in critical need of supplies and is asking for the donation of items such as portable cribs, car seats, baby clothing and diapers.

Baby's Bounty is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 2008 by civic activist Kim Amato. It is devoted to helping babies born to disadvantaged families. Recipients include domestic abuse victims, teen mothers and those living in poverty.

The town of Blue Diamond regularly schedules music gatherings Saturday nights in the village's unofficially titled "Tree Bar," across from the Rebel gas station. The event is free and open to the public; musicians are welcome.

VETERANS TO BE HONORED AT EVENT JUNE 6

A Welcome Home Celebration for veterans of all generations and their families is scheduled for 10 a.m. June 6 at Palace Station, 2411 W. Sahara Ave.
