MAD MUD RUN TO FEATURE 4.6-MILE COURSE

A chance to get down and dirty in the name of fitness is planned for 10 a.m. May 21 at the Providence master-planned community, at the Las Vegas Beltway and Hualapai Way.

The Mad Mud Run organizers promise a 4.6-mile race with multiple obstacles ending in a messy mud pit. Awards for fastest individual and team will be handed out. Prizes for best costumes also are planned.

Entrants and other attendees are encouraged to donate to or bring gently used clothing and household items for Safe Nest, a domestic violence program with 24-hour emergency shelters and a 24-hour crisis hot line, among other programs.

Mad Mud Run obstacles encompass typical boot camp-style activities with a low wall, a belly crawl, balance beams, a water wall, a hay bale, and of course, a 40-foot-long mud pit that participants must cross. The minimum age is 12.

For those younger than 18, special waivers are required. Teams of two and five also may participate and may be coed, all male or all female.

The cost is $60 per person until 9 a.m. on race day, when check-ins close. Electronic registration closes May 17.

The cost includes an event T-shirt, a goody bag, a dog tag and refreshments.

A mandatory pre-race meeting is set for 9:45 a.m., with the race beginning at 10 a.m.

The 100-meter Mudpuppy Splash is open to the first 200 4- to 12-year-olds who register. The $15 per child cost includes a T-shirt, a race bib, a dog tag and refreshments. Children ages 4 to 6 must be accompanied by a parent through the mud pit. Registration will be available until 10 a.m. on race day, with the event set to start at around 11:30 a.m.

Pre-event check-in is planned from 5-7 p.m. May 20 at REI, 710 S. Rampart Blvd.
