WARD 6 YOUTH COUNCIL PLANS
INAUGURAL MEETING THURSDAY
Fourteen Centennial Hills high school students are scheduled to gather for their first official Ward 6 Youth Council meeting from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Centennial Hills Community Center YMCA, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive.
Ward 6 Las Vegas City Councilman Steve Ross formed the council last year to get teens more involved in community issues and foster civic-minded service.
The youths are to report on their vision for how they can help improve the community and identify their goals and objectives. Representatives from UNLV are set to help facilitate the meeting.
Students were selected from Arbor View, Centennial, Peterson and Shadow Ridge high schools and the Northwest Career and Technical Academy.
VIEW NEIGHBORHOOD NEWSPAPERS SEEKS FEEDBACK ABOUT COMMUNITY COVERAGE
Participants are needed for a focus group to help View Neighborhood Newspapers improve its coverage of the Centennial Hills area.
The event is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. April 18 at the Centennial Hills Community Center YMCA, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive.
Input will be aimed at helping View best serve the readers of its seven neighborhood-specific sections, including Centennial. Light refreshments are planned.

ANNUAL LANDSCAPE CONTEST

Applications for the Southern Nevada Water Authority's 14th annual Landscape Awards competition are being taken through May 7.
The awards honor residential and professional water-efficient landscapes that are both attractive and functional in Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Laughlin and unincorporated Clark County. Winners will be announced at a special breakfast ceremony in June.

RED ROCK INTERPRETIVE ASSOCIATION
TO ANNOUNCE ART CONTEST WINNERS
The Red Rock Interpretive Association plans to announce the winners of the 2012 Red Rock Canyon Art Contest Saturday at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area amphitheater, 1000 Scenic Loop Drive.
Participants are kindergarten through 12th-grade students of Southern Nevada. Entries reflect wildlife of the Mojave Desert and Red Rock Canyon. Light refreshments will be provided, and winning entries will be on display in the gallery.

TOUR DE SUMMERLIN CYCLING EVENT
Set FOR APRIL 21 AT RED ROCK CANYON
The 2012 Tour de Summerlin cycling event is scheduled to bring hundreds of cyclists through Summerlin and the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area April 21.
The event offers 40-, 75- and 100-mile treks and will benefit the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada.

NIGHT HIKES PLANNED AT RED ROCK CANYON
Stars and planets will be the focus of attention during two night hikes planned at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.
n Join Aaron Leifheit, environmental education specialist for the Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association, to watch the sun set and Jupiter shine Monday at Fossil Ridge in Red Rock Canyon.
The day before marks Jupiter's closest approach to the Earth, so there should be excellent opportunities to see the planet, organizers said. A moderate 2½-mile hike is planned.
n The Interpretive Association plans to host the Cottonwood Valley Star and Meteor Hike April 23 at Red Rock Canyon.
On flat and expansive terrain, the moderate four-mile hike is scheduled on the tail end of the Lyrid Meteor Shower. Learn the stories behind several popular constellations.
Both hikes are for those 12 or older, and participants are asked to bring flashlights.

CLARK COUNTY COMMISSION TO MEET
The Clark County Commission is scheduled to meet at 9:15 a.m. April 17 in the Clark County Commission Chambers at the Clark County Government Center, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway.
The public is encouraged to attend.
