REMOTE CONTROL BOAT RACES
PLANNED AT LAKE LAS VEGAS
Members of the North American Model Boat Association are taking to the water this weekend at Lake Las Vegas in the ultimate remote control boat racing event. Racing begins at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday on the west side of the lake, just across from The Village. Admission for spectators is free.
The race fee is $10 per boat and $5 per boat for those 18 or younger. Additionally, racers must have the proper licensing, which will provide racers with coverage throughout 2011 at $45 per person and $25 per person for ages 18 or younger. For rules and more information, visit namba19.com.
BIRD EXPO set for CONVENTION CENTER
The Las Vegas Avicultural Society plans to present its Bird Mart and Exotic Bird Expo from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Henderson Convention Center, 200 S. Water St.
The event includes vendors from Arizona, California and Nevada offering cages, toys, bird food and other bird products. The event is $5 and free for children younger than 10. For more information, visit hendersonlive.com.
RESUME BUILDING SEMINAR OFFERED

POLICE department is accepting applications for CITIZENS ACADEMY
The Henderson Police Department is accepting applications for its Citizens Academy.
The 13-week academy, which meets from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays starting May 17, is slated to discuss topics such as gang enforcement, the detention center, use of force and narcotic enforcement.

OMBUDSMAN'S OFFICE discusses HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATIONS
The Office of the Ombudsman for Owners in Common-Interest Communities and Condominium Hotels is scheduled to host a seminar from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 18 at the Paseo Verde Library, 280 S. Green Valley Parkway. The session allows people to learn the basics about homeowner associations, including the election process for the board and the responsibility of the association. Desert Newcomers to host spring fashion show at Wildhorse Golf Club
A spring fashion show featuring Alfred Dunner attire is planned from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 18 by the Desert Newcomers Club Inc. The show is scheduled at the Wildhorse Golf Club, 2100 W. Warm Springs Road.
Desert Newcomers Club Inc. is a social women's organization for those who have lived in the Las Vegas area for three years or less and want to meet new friends.

Animal rescue group plans FUNDRAISER AT LAKE LAS VEGAS
Heaven Can Wait Animal Society is scheduled to host its Gimme Shelter concert and fundraiser at 6 p.m. May 28 at The Village Lake Las Vegas, 30 Strada di Villaggio.
The event is to feature performances from Arms of America, a U2 tribute band, and Skip Martin, a former lead singer of Kool and the Gang.

Henderson named Tree city USA for the 20th consecutive year
The city of Henderson has been recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA community for the 20th year for its commitment to urban forestry.
The city also received the foundation's Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating progress in its community forestry program. The Growth Award honors environmental improvement and higher levels of tree care in Tree City USA communities.
The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service. To become a Tree City USA community, the city had to meet several standards, including having a comprehensive community forestry program and an annual Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
Help stamp out hunger this weekend during letter carriers food drive
Residents are asked to leave nonperishable food items at their mailbox Saturday for their letter carrier to pick up and deliver to a local food pantry. Residents also can stop by any Albertsons/Sav-On on Saturday and donate money at the register and drop off donations of nonperishable food items.
The most needed items include canned meat, canned tuna, canned ham, canned salmon, canned stew, peanut butter, pasta swirls & beef (pop top), beans & franks (pop top), Vienna sausages, cereal boxes (single-serving), beans, Bisquick, oatmeal, sugar and flour.
Buy a pin to help a child
During May, all Short Line Express convenience stores plan to sell Yogi Bear and Kermit paper hearts, and select stores plan to sell various styles of Gold Heart Pins to raise money in support of Variety -- the Children's Charity. Variety helps children with special needs in Southern Nevada. For more information about the group, visit varietysn.org.
Patrons can purchase a paper heart for $1 or a gold heart pin for $2.
Get $75 mammograms in May
Now through May 31, The Breast Center at Sunrise, 3006 S. Maryland Parkway, Suite 250; Southern Hills Hospital, 9300 W. Sunset Road, and Red Rock Radiology, 7130 Smoke Ranch Road, are offering a special $75 digital screening mammogram, without a physician's referral, for any woman at least 40 years old.
This program is most beneficial to women who may be uninsured or underinsured. If you have insurance, check with your provider. You may find that your mammogram is fully covered.
