New Angle TV ad slams Reid on DREAM act for illegal immigrant students
GOP U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle has a new TV ad criticizing her opponent Sen. Harry Reid for pushing a plan to give illegal immigrant students "a pathway to amnesty."
The ad targets a failed attempt by Reid this week in the Senate to attach the DREAM Act legislation to a defense authorization bill.
The act would open the door to U.S. citizenship for immigrants brought into the country illegally as children -- if they serve in the military or attend college for two years.
The Angle ad slams Reid for voting to give "special tax breaks" and Social Security benefits to illegal immigrants, a charge the Reid campaign says is a lie and outside groups have called false or misleading. The campaign commercial also notes Reid's opposition to a popular Arizona law cracking down on illegal immigrants.
"Now Reid has introduced a plan that gives illegals a pathway to amnesty and even special college tuition rates, with the money coming from Nevada taxpayers," the ad narrator says, referring to the DREAM act. "Harry Reid, the best friend illegals have ever had."
In the past, Reid, other Democrats and some GOP supporters of immigration reform have supported the DREAM act as part of a comprehensive package. But, unable to pass such broad legislation in a highly partisan election year, Reid tried this week to pass the help for students who have been living in the U.S. illegally for years. The attempt failed, but his effort is expected to help him gain more support from his Democratic Party base and from Hispanics, who make up one-quarter of Nevada's population of nearly 3 million.
