New plan, Nevada: Let’s train unemployed workers
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rory Reid has a new plan he says will leverage existing unemployment benefits resources into new job training without costing the taxpayers additional money.
Under Reid's "Work Ready Nevada" plan, workers on unemployment could accept work that allows them to be trained on the job while continuing to receive unemployment benefits.
It is similar to a program already in place in Georgia.
According to Reid: "The minimal stipends are more than paid for by the decreased amount of time
unemployed workers draw unemployment benefits. According to the American Institute for Full Employment’s analysis of U.S. Department of Labor figures, people in Georgia collect unemployment benefits for nearly a month less than the national average."
Reid, chairman of the Clark County Commission, trails Republican Brian Sandoval, a former federal judge, by double-digit percentage points in nearly every poll that's been published on the race for Nevada governor.
