Newlywed Kellie Pickler: Marriage is amazing
Kellie Pickler — performing tonight at the Silverton — is such a funny little (5-foot-1) country star. She called me up and this is the first thing I heard in her North Carolina accent:
“I’m havin’ ta put you on speakerphone because I dropped some goo or somethin’ on my phone, and it won’t let me hear through the ear speaker. I have the worst luck with phones! They don’t last very long.”
Pickler just got married Jan. 1 in the Caribbean to songwriter Kyle Jacobs. Married life is “a piece of cake,” she says.
“I’ve only been married a month and a half so, so far it’s amazing!”
Their intimate little wedding and honeymoon were ideal.
“I’ve never been anywhere more beautiful,” she says. “I mean, the water there is so gorgeous. The people there greet you with a smile and a drink.”
Jacobs is traveling with her on tour. They flew together to Iraq, too, right after the wedding, so she could entertain the troops.
“The weather was a lot different” in Iraq, “but we were in great company — the men and women serving the country.”
All this traveling is a big deal to such a Southern girl who — when she was a celebrity contestant on “Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?” — said: “I thought Europe was a country,” “Is France a country,” and "I've heard of Turkey, but Hungary?"
But she’s excited to fill in her world knowledge as enthusiastically as she can.
“Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to be a gypsy in a band and travel and meet people and learn about their cultures,” she said.
“I’m so fascinated by other people’s cultures and their way of live and their way of living and who they are. I love learning about other people and whatnot. God made this world, and it’s so beautiful. For us not to take advantage and see it is kind of a shame on us.”
If you want to see her in concert, tickets are here.
