Nonprofit gets ‘cool’ gift

HomeAid Southern Nevada and Newland Communities have joined to install three new air-conditioning units at Boys Hope Girls Hope, Las Vegas.

Newland Communities, developer of Union Park in downtown Las Vegas, and HomeAid Southern Nevada created a Summer Healthy Living Program to assist local nonprofit agencies in need of air conditioning repair during the hot summer months.

Through an application process and evaluation, Boys Hope Girls Hope was awarded a grant to underwrite the cost of the new units.

To celebrate the Summer Healthy Living Program and Newland's donation, HomeAid hosted a "Get Cool" ice cream event on July 30, during which the developer made a formal announcement of its gift.

The funds for the air conditioning units were raised at the 2007 Life is Good Pumpkin Festivals held in Newland communities nationwide. Each October, Newland together with apparel company Life is Good, hold fall festivals to raise funds for kids in need.

The 2008 Life is Good Pumpkin Festivals will be held on Oct. 25 in seven states.

HomeAid Southern Nevada is best known for securing Pardee Homes and its subcontractors to oversee and contribute a $1 million renovation of St. Jude's Ranch for Children in Boulder City.

Its overall mission is to build housing for homeless families and individuals.

Newland Communities is one of the country's largest privately owned development companies. In December 2005, the company was retained by the city of Las Vegas to manage and oversee development at Union Park.

The development is a $6 billion, 11-million-square-foot, mixed-use urban community in downtown Las Vegas.
