ECONOMIC TEAM MEETING PLANNED

The newly formed Mayor's Economic Advisory Committee, consisting of about 20 local developers and business owners, is slated to gather at 4 p.m. today in room 937 of North Las Vegas City Hall, 2250 Las Vegas Blvd. North.

The public is encouraged to attend. The committee is to discuss a strategic plan, goals and a policy and management agenda for the city.

The committee had its first meeting Feb. 28, and the group received a progress report of the city's financial obstacles and condition. Committee members include representatives from Cox Communications, Southwest Gas, NV Energy and many development companies.

MAYOR TO SERVE AS KEYNOTE SPEAKER

FREE TAX ASSISTANCE OFFERED TO SENIORS

Taxpayers 60 or older with low to moderate income can utilize free tax preparation assistance by AARP from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays through April 13 at the Aliante Library, 2400 W. Deer Springs Way.

The service is appointment only.

Participants must bring Social Security cards for themselves and all dependents, last year's tax return and a valid photo ID.

Beekeeping classes planned at orchard

A series of beekeeping classes is scheduled at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Orchard starting at 8 a.m. April 21. The class will last the entire day and will orient bee enthusiasts on how to manage small bee colonies in Southern Nevada with the idea of producing honey and preventing the bees from becoming Africanized.

TEXT CAMPAIGN TO BENEFIT THE SHADE TREE

Text and support the victims of domestic violence assisted by the Shade Tree, 1 W. Owens Ave.

All of the donation goes directly to the Shade Tree, a nonprofit assisting victims of domestic violence.

NATURE WRITING CLASS SET
AT RED ROCK CANYON

The Bureau of Land Management plans to host Introduction to Nature Writing, a sensory-based writing class, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. March 29 and April 12 and 26 at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

Each session will include short writing exercises, group discussions and selected readings from notable American nature writers. Participants may share their own writing.

Depending on the group's interest, plan to experiment with different types of nature writing such as creative non-fictions, short story, memoir, poetry or simply writing for one's own enjoyment.

CASINOS TO GO DARK FOR EARTH HOUR MARCH 31

Nine Boyd Gaming properties in Las Vegas plan to go dark for Earth Hour from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. March 31 as a reflection of the company's commitment to sustainable business practices.

By installing more efficient lights in a variety of areas during the last three years, Boyd Gaming has cut its annual electricity usage by more than 17 million kilowatt-hours. New initiatives now being introduced will reduce usage by an additional 5 million kwh.

TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION OFFERS REDUCED FARE TRANSIT PASSES

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada announced that 30-day and five-day full and reduced fare transit passes now are available for purchase at more than 135 7-Eleven locations across the Las Vegas Valley. With the new addition of 7-Eleven stores, it will be easier and more convenient for Transportation Commission transit riders to purchase their full or reduced fare transit passes.

The 30-day and five-day full and reduced fare transit passes also are available at other retailers throughout Southern Nevada, including Albertsons, Walgreens and Mariana's. Passes also are available for purchase at bookstores at the College of Southern Nevada campuses.

CAMP REGISTRATION TO OPEN

Open registration for Clark County Parks and Recreation's summer overnight camps in July commenced March 1.

The price is $400 per child.

This fee includes all meals, snacks, activities, supplies and an official camp T-shirt. Omni Discovery Camp, for ages 8 to 12, is set to take place from July 22-27, and the On the Edge Camp, for ages 13 to 15, is set for July 15-20.

Both camps will take place at Camp Lee Canyon, about 30 minutes from North Las Vegas.

SAFE NEST RELOCATES TO NORTH LAS VEGAS

The Safe Nest Donation Center has relocated to 4208 N. Arcata Way, Suite C. The center accepts gently used clothing, small household items, old cellphones, recyclable items such as paper, metal, and plastic, as well as vehicle donations. It also accepts large household appliances including washers, dryers and water heaters in any condition.

Donations may be dropped off at the donation center during business hours, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, or call 257-3800 to schedule a home pickup. For vehicle donations, call 203-8661. Safe Nest will pick up the vehicle and handle all the paperwork.

All donated items help raise funds to allow Safe Nest to provide necessary services for victims of domestic violence and their children.

THE ANIMAL FOUNDATION OFFERING DISCOUNTS FOR SENIORS

The Animal Foundation, 655 N. Mojave Road, is launching its Seniors 4 Seniors program, offering local seniors (60 or older) $50 discounts on adoption fees for dogs 3 years or older and cats 1 year or older. The shelter receives more than 50,000 animals annually. Younger cats and dogs often find homes quickly and easily while older pets frequently are passed over. Animals that are a bit older are often calmer and gentler, which can be a better match for less active people. PHOTO CHALLENGE BENEFITS FAMILIES

Show off your photogenic child for a cause with local photographers Portraits to You and Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, a nonprofit that provides free photography sessions to families suffering an early infant loss.

Participants pose for a session with Portraits to You for a $39 fee. Families also receive a print.

Voting is to be conducted through March 23.

The top 25 vote-getters are judged by a panel of photography experts, and the top three are to receive awards including a camera, gift cards and savings bond.

WALK AROUND NEVADA
WITHOUT LEAVING TOWN

The Southern Nevada Health District offers the Walk Around Nevada program, which helps participants track their physical activity online as they trek around the state and clock in 1,442 miles.

Anyone can sign up for this free online program and start a tour of Nevada. Track mileage online via a red line that marks your tour of the state. It also offers tips about staying hydrated, stretching and healthful hiking basics.

Walk Around Nevada maps include the entire state, a Lake Mead map and a Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake map.
