Centennial Hills Active Adult Center wins garden award
Centennial Hills Active Adult Center‘s Celestial Community Garden was selected as a winner in the 2015 Landscape Awards hosted by the Southern Nevada Water Authority.
The Celestial Community Garden has 13 gardeners who tend 10 full-size garden beds, an herb garden and orchard area. The garden was selected as the winner based on the core criteria of aesthetics, irrigation, plant selection and community involvement.
Members of the garden are invited to attend a special ceremony Sept. 17 to receive their award.
Crossing guard recruitment for 2015-16 school year starts
The North Las Vegas Police Department is recruiting for school crossing guards to work near elementary schools for the upcoming school year. Crossing guards are responsible for assisting students safely across busy intersections on their way to and from school.
The position is part-time and pays $9 an hour. Guards typically work from 6:30 to 9:15 a.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m. They must be available to work split shifts every day school is in session, depending on to which school they are assigned.

Culinary Academy of Las Vegas to provide free and nutritious meals
The Culinary Academy of Las Vegas is set to provide free and nutritious meals to children 18 or younger Monday through Friday during the summer. Meals are to be provided to all children at 100 Academy of Excellence, 2341 Comstock Drive; Agape, 3650 N. Rancho Drive, No. 106; New Discovery Behavioral Center, 3660 N. Rancho Drive; the Pearson Community Center, 1625 W. Carey Ave.; and the Richard Steele Boxing Club, 2475 W. Cheyenne Ave., No. 110.
The federally funded program is administered by Nevada‘s Department of Agriculture to youths living in low-income areas. The academy expects to prepare and deliver more than 1,200 meals a day this summer, for a total of more than 66,000 meals.

North Las Vegas Library District hosts inaugural adult summer reading club
The North Las Vegas Library District invites residents 18 or older to participate in its inaugural adult summer reading club. Join the club for a chance to win prizes, including the grand prize of a Kindle Fire HD. Participants can register at any North Las Vegas Library branch. Call 702-839-2980.
North Las Vegas Library District hosts youth summer reading club
The North Las Vegas Library invites youths 18 or younger to read and earn prizes through its Summer Reading Program. Children who can‘t read on their own are still encouraged to participate by having someone read to them.
Stop by any North Las Vegas Library branch and pick up a logbook to start the program. Each section on the logbook equals one prize and one ticket for the grand prize drawing, a Kindle Fire HD. As an additional prize, children 12 or younger who complete the program can earn a free voucher to visit the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay. Call 702-839-2980.
Master Gardeners to host kids gardening classes
The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Junior Master Gardener program plans to offer hands-on gardening activities for children through July 30. Classes are slated from 8 to 11 a.m. Thursdays at the University of Nevada Clark County Center for Urban Food Production, 4600 Horse Drive.
The classes aim to help children learn about the environment, how plants grow in the desert and where food comes from. The class fee is $52 per child. A multiple sibling discount is available upon request. Students must register to participate as class size is limited.

J.R. Pony Parties plans summer day camp
Farm Day Camp 2015 at J.R. Pony Parties, an educational farm, is planned from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through July 24 and from Aug. 3-7. It is open to children in grades 1-5. The cost is $200 per child, and sibling discounts are available.
