Note to Roman Polanski: Fame doesn’t trump decency
October 1, 2009 - 6:59 am
This just in on the Roman Polanski extradition: "In France, several government officials who had initially rushed to Polanski's defense were being more cautious on Thursday, stressing that the renowned filmmaker is not above the law."
If France is starting to get it, maybe Hollywood will, too.
Right. And one day (with enough campaign money) Nevadans will really, really start to like Harry Reid.
There is some hope, however. (For Hollywood, not Reid.) Singer Jewel Twittered this: “Polanski-admitted raping a 13 yr old-whs every1 in the arts upset hes facing jail? cause hes a gifted director? what am i missing?”
You're not missing a thing, Jewel.
If only all those directors and actors who initially and wrong-headedly opposed Polanski's arrest would come around, too. Do they not realize that when they do such things it only serves to reinforce all the biases mainstream America holds about them.
It was stunning to read that Whoopi Goldberg backs Polanski because it wasn't "rape, rape"? It most certainly was. In addition, it was pedophilia, pedophilia.
And what to make of Woody Allen? He signed the petition to free Polanski.
If Polanski had any smarts, he'd disavow that support. Woody Allen? Doesn't get any riper than that.
As the Washington Post rightly observed: Does fame trump decency?
News flash: In Hollywood, many say yes.
