Notes for the weekend

Here are some things worthy of Complete Las Vegans this weekend:

• If you are not aware of the work being done by Nevada Policy Research Institute, you should be. They also send out a "week in review" newsletter electronically. It's always worth spending time with it. If you're looking for a conservative look at Nevada politics and policies, coupled with some good reporting, this is a must read. I can't say that I agree with NPRI down the line, but the information is always thought provoking.

• Tune in to my column Sunday in the Las Vegas Review-Journal. This week I'll be waxing eloquently on the "death tax." Stalin loved that tax. So did Mao. Why the hell do we?

• We'll wait until the lame-duck session of Congress is over to fully assess. But it looks at this time like our own Harry Reid is about to get skunked on all the stuff he said he was going to do for us. But he's good for Nevada. Just don't pay attention to that leading-the-league unemployment thingy.

• I love reading Norm Clarke. His stuff is fun every day.

• Sometimes I hate reading honest movie critics like Carol Cling. I get certain movies built up in my head ... and then when they come out she reviews them ... and basically tells me I'll be disappointed. That's how I felt this morning reading her review of "Black Swan." Dammit, Carol. B-minus? I guess I'll take the grandkids to see "Tangled."
