Nurse accidentally cuts off baby’s toe removing IV
A New Mexico mother is considering taking legal action after a nurse at the University of New Mexico Hospital accidentally cut off her baby's left pinky toe.
According to the baby's mother, Erica Hogue, Davante Hogue and his twin brother, Delante, were born prematurely last April. Since then, Davante has remained in the hospital due to what the hospital called a " stage-2 brain bleed," which the hospital said means he may never walk, talk, see or hear.
While cutting tape that was holding an IV in his foot, Hogue says the nurse severed Davante's left pinky toe, PIX11 reports.
"He had an IV placed in his foot and the nurse that was taking care of him was cutting away the tape and cut off his toe," said Hogue.
An orthopedic surgeon attempted to save the baby's toe, but nothing could be done.
"The orthopedic surgeon came up and stitched all the way around his toe placed him in a leg cast," she told KOB.
Erika says the hospital investigated the incident and has since apologized.
“It just makes me angry that something like this could happen. For me that is just not enough. I believe my baby is worth so much more than that.” she said.
KOB reached out to the University of New Mexico Hospital, but they can not comment on a specific patient matter.
