Obama landslide looms?

I heard from a few loyal readers when I penned this column entitled "How does Romney not win Nevada." The idea of Obama leading Romney in a state that ought to be low-hanging fruit for Romney served as a wake-up call to more than a few.

Along those lines, allow me to point you to Michael Tomasky's piece today dissecting a possible Obama landslide on Election Day. He writes:

"There’s a secret lurking behind everything you’re reading about the upcoming election, a secret that all political insiders know — or should — but few are talking about, most likely because it takes the drama out of the whole business. The secret is the electoral college, and the fact is that the more you look at it, the more you come to conclude that Mitt Romney has to draw an inside straight like you’ve never ever seen in a movie to win this thing. This is especially true now that it seems as if Pennsylvania isn’t really up for grabs. Romney’s paths to 270 are few."

From what I'm seeing in Nevada, there's truth in that assessment. Something has to change for Romney to make Election Night competitive. He can't rely on a fluke event. In Nevada, I think he's got to be on the ground winning the hearts and souls of voters. But he's also got to that in all the so-called "swing" states. That's spreading the guy pretty thin.

Anyway, the good news for Romney right now is that there is plenty of time left and he has a built-in message — we're not better off today than when Obama took office. It is, indeed, the economy, stupid. I also think another theme is emerging for Romney that will work powerfully in his favor — his propensity to tell the brutal truth. He did it in England. He did in Israel. Liberals called them gaffes. But I think if Romney can tell the brutal truth to Americans on the economy, it will be a plus, not a minus. Obama's economic plans are not working. There was no "summer of recovery". We are slipping backward under the Obama worldview that puts politically correct ideas ahead of reality.
