On Memorial Day, studying war no more
One of my favorite Memorial Day stories takes place in the distant past.
When Joseph Graham died more than nine decades ago in Las Vegas, his
friend William Keith made sure there was a proper stone on his grave
at Woodlawn Cemetery not far from downtown.
More than friends, the two men shared an important bond. They had
fought on opposite sides in the Civil War.
In all, eight Civil War veterans are buried in Southern Nevada cemeteries.
When Keith died a few years later, his wish was to be interred next
to his friend. That wish granted, he rested in peace.
Side by side, they would study war no more forever.
