ON THE BEAT: Lance Armstrong makes appearance at CrossVegas Cyclocross

Cycling fans were pleasantly surprised last night when famed cyclist Lance Armstrong showed up at Desert Breeze Community Park to race in the CrossVegas Cyclocross. He finished about 20th out of 92 cyclists. Californian Ryan Trebon of the Kona/Les Gets team took first.

Armstrong fell during lap two on a hairpin turn. He recovered quickly to weave back into the pack. A few fans splashed beer on Armstrong as he powered past the crowd of about 5,000.

Armstrong won Tour de France a record-breaking seven consecutive years, from 1999 to 2005. He announced a few weeks ago he would come out of retirement to race in the 2009 Tour de France.
