On the Holocaust, get it right, Mr. President
May 30, 2012 - 9:16 am
President Barack Obama erroneously identified a Nazi death camp as a "Polish death camp" and it spoiled the righteous awarding of Jan Karski with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
You can read more about the faux pas here and, as always, make up your own mind on the severity of the error.
For me, this is the kind of mistake a careful president ought not to make, especially given the circumstances.
But it's the Obama Administration's behavior after the mistake that I find odd.
The president through surrogates has said he regretted the error. Essentially giving the whole deal a low-key "move along" nod. No doubt, the president doesn't want to appear like he doesn't know his history during an election year. (Which, by the way, is a logical conclusion.) The Polish government, meanwhile, remains pretty sore about the error and has pressed for more.
Getting the Holocaust right is a big deal and I think it is well worth the time for the president to backtrack on this. It's teaching moment, as you so often like to say, Mr. President. Use it for good.
