Sunrise Hospital campus goes tobacco-free

Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center and Sunrise Children's Hospital, 3186 S. Maryland Parkway, is now a tobacco-free campus, prohibiting use of tobacco inside or outside.

The decision came after 2,300 Sunrise employees participated in a survey and 77 percent responded they would like a smoke-free campus.

Change tossed into water attractions to aid Ronald McDonald House

Every coin tossed into Miracle Mile Shops' fountain and the indoor rainstorm in the center, 3663 Las Vegas Blvd. South, in July will be donated to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Las Vegas to help create and support programs that directly improve the health, education and well-being of children in the community.

The fundraiser is to benefit the charitable foundation's Join Us For 1 campaign, which reminds supporters that just one person, one penny, one catalyst can spark big change in the lives of the children and families Ronald McDonald House Charities serves each year.

Miracle Mile Shops is open 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday.

WOmen of Color conference to include networking, lectures and workshops

Network with other female professionals, celebrate diversity and mingle with other career women at the fifth annual Women of Color Conference planned for Aug. 1-3 at Mandalay Bay, 3950 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

The Women of Color Conference is open to all women and men and offers a forum for career development and networking, featuring nationally recognized speakers and executive development experts.

Due to popular demand and exceptional attendee turnout in its previous four years, the fifth annual Women of Color Conference will feature an enhanced schedule, expanding from one to three days.

All conference proceeds this year will benefit organizations serving women and girls.

The early registration fee is $150. Registration includes the conference and all workshops, lectures, access to the Career Center, where participants obtain advice from certified career coaches, and the conference's signature Empowering Our Future luncheon. Reduced student registration (with valid college ID) is available for $75.

See snakes at Springs Preserve

A new live animal show called "Venom!" is scheduled to run at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. daily through Aug. 14 at the Springs Preserve, 333 S. Valley View Blvd.

The rotating lineup of reptiles to be featured includes rattlesnakes, the desert night snake, gopher snakes and a Gila monster. Animals will be separated from the audience by an enclosure for safety purposes.

LIED DISCOVERY CHILDREN'S MUSEUM FINALIST IN TOYOTA 100 CARS FOR GOOD

Lied Discovery Children's Museum, 833 Las Vegas Blvd. North, is one of 500 finalists in Toyota's 100 Cars for Good program, which will award vehicles to 100 nonprofit organizations based on votes from the public.

The program, which began May 9, showcases five nonprofit groups each day at facebook.com/toyota. Page visitors can vote once a day. The museum is scheduled to be highlighted Saturday.

Should the museum win a vehicle, it will be used to expand the House Calls Outreach Program, which provides interactive health and science education in Southern Nevada classrooms.

Capture DOWNTOWN photography COMPETITION ANNOUNCED

Professional and amateur photographers older than 21 are invited to participate in Capture Downtown! -- a photography competition sponsored by the city of Las Vegas, the Downtown Las Vegas Alliance, Symphony Park and the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Entry categories include Lifestyle: depicting everyday life/work/play in downtown Las Vegas, Stars: interesting people who live/work downtown, and Icons: to include downtown landmarks, neon signs and historic buildings.

There will be first-, second- and third-place winners in each category. Winners are to be announced in October during the Symphony Park Lecture at the Historic Fifth Street School, 401 S. Fourth St. A People's Choice Award also will be given, and the entry photos will be hosted on lvrj.com from Sept. 1-22 for voting.

Prizes include gift certificates from downtown retailers and hotels, downtown merchandise and more. The entry deadline is Aug. 15. All entries must be submitted digitally to downtownlasvegasalliance.com/captureddowntown.

BABY ITEMS NEEDED FOR MILITARY FAMILIES

Cannery Casino Resorts is teaming with Operation Showers of Appreciation to host a large baby shower for local military moms. Often military wives and enlistees come to Southern Nevada as part of a relocation where they're away from family and friends. Others are pregnant while their spouse may be serving overseas.

Anyone can drop off of new baby items, clothing and diapers at the valet area at any Cannery Casino Resorts property, including the Rampart Casino, 221 N. Rampart Blvd.

Donations will be accepted through July 23. About 100 expectant or recent mothers will be presented with the gifts during a shower planned for July 30 at the Eastside Cannery, 5255 Boulder Highway.
